May 68’s 40th Anniversary

May ’68 had an enormous social impact. In France, it is considered to be the turning point that saw the replacement of conservative morality based on religion, patriotism, respect for authority with the liberal virtues of equality, sexual liberation, and human rights that characterize French society today.

The term mai 68 is used to refer to the shift in values, especially when referring to its most idealistic aspects. Also France was far from the only country to witness student protests in 1968. In the United States the events were preceded by a student-led occupation and closure of Columbia University on April 23.

A general sense of shaking up old society was happening throughout the world. Like the heightened sense of political involvement, cinema was also one of the sources of motivation and inspiration during this time and May 68 was heavily documented by filmmakers everywhere.

Different film series, talks and exhibitions are happening accross the US in honor of the 40th anniversary of the events in 1968.

Please check our pages to see the events organized in your area.
